Year 5/6 Sportshall Athletics
This years 5/6 sportshall athletics took place at K2 on the 20th January 2010. Despite the heavy snow which fell on the day, nine teams battled the elements to take part in one of the most successful sportshall events to date.
The competition was divided into the two traditional disciplines of track events and field events. The track events consisted of various relay races, including an obstacle relay and paarlauf – an alternative to the traditional relay where each team member completes an equal number of laps, the paarlauf allows a more tactical race of 6 laps being completed by 2 runners in any way they choose. The field events required a combination of jumping and throwing techniques, and included the standing long jump, seated throw, vertical jump and speed bounce. Over 35 leaders from Thomas Bennett Community College got involved and helped run each of the stations; time keeping, scoring and provided guidance and demonstrations.
The nine teams created a fantastic atmosphere in the K2 sportshall with fellow team members cheering each other on throughout the afternoon. Excellent competition was provided by all teams with some very close battles for first place. Competition manager, Holly Sutcliffe said ‘all the children seemed to really enjoy themselves and it was great to get the leaders involved in running each of the events’.
After all of the events had been completed the scores were added up. Congratulations to Maidenbower Juniors who narrowly beat their competitors to first place, making this their second consecutive win at the competition. Well done to Desmond Anderson Primary and St Francis RC Primary School who came second and third respectively.
A big thank you to everyone who helped organise and run the event!
