This week saw the first of Crawley School Sport Partnership’s Olympic style events in the form of the annual primary swimming gala. The gala is one of three events chosen to be part of CSSP’s Olympic Values Project.

The aim of the project is to celebrate the Games and promote the core Olympic and Paralympic values in the run up to London 2012. As part of the values project each school has been given an Olympic nation to represent at all Crawley events in the run up to the 2012.

Celebrating in true Olympic fashion, schools arrived at the pool waving their nation’s flags and banners at the pool side as they arrived to Olympic themed music. Once the teams had been welcomed the gala, races got underway. Both individual and team races were swum – each one focuses on a different stroke. Some great performances were seen in the pool by everyone and great sportsmanship was demonstrated as the crowds cheered on their fellow swimmers.

After a busy morning of races the points were added up. Congratulations to Ethiopia (a.k.a Broadfield East Juniors) who narrowly beat North Korea (Gossops Green) to the gold medal position, swimming their way to the county finals which are due to take place later next year.

A big thank you to Tim and Liz from Crawley Swimming Club for all of their help on the day. For more information about Crawley Swimming Club please click here.
