At the Crawley Schools Athletics Values Event at K2 on Wednesday 13th July Gossops Green Primary School aka North Korea took the gold medal in the Year 5/6 Team competition and silver in the Year 3/4 Team event.

The Athletics Values Event was the final competition hosted by Crawley School Sport Partnership and was a fitting way to sign off in the run up to London 2012. KC Dance Academy opened proceedings with a fantastic performance which was followed by a parade around the track with each school proudly representing their Olympic/Paralympic nation by waving banners and flags and sporting their country’s colours. Special mentions go to St. Andrew’s Primary who dressed in green and white to represent Nigeria and Bewbush who arrived with two huge flags for their adopted country of Poland.

In true Olympic style the winning athletes in each were presented gold, silver and bronze medals on a podium in front of the spectators and teams. The athletics was of the highest standard with no fewer than 11 event records smashed or equalled throughout the day. Individual brilliance was achieved by Amy Hunt, Bewbush (Poland) with gold medals in the Year 3/4 long jump, 100m and relay and Alex Jenkins, Maidenbower (Argentina) with gold medals in the Year 5/6 long jump, 80m and relay.

The closing ceremony had a special feel with excitement created by brilliant performances from Shaun’s Angels street dance and Argentinean tango by Arlette and Graham (performances were organised with Crawley Borough Council as part of the Crawley in Motion project) the award presentations and a few emotional thank you messages to SSP staff.
